Media relations and AI influence overlap, but they are not the same map.

Observed evidence

Overlap between journalists teams pitch and journalists AI cites

Only 2% of the journalists most frequently pitched also appeared among the journalists whose work AI answers cited in the study.

Reach and answer influence are different signals

Only 2% of the journalists most frequently pitched overlapped with the journalists whose work appeared among AI-cited sources in the What Is AI Reading? study. Neither list is wrong. One supports a media-relations workflow; the other shows whose reporting surfaced in a particular AI citation environment.

A high-value reporter may be essential to a campaign but rarely appear in the answers a team is monitoring. Another journalist may write durable category explainers that influence AI responses yet never sit on a traditional outreach list. Treating those groups as identical hides useful strategy.

Connect reporting to the questions it influences

Do not rank journalists globally. See which reporters and outlets show up around the questions, audiences, locations, and narratives your team cares about. That view reveals missing proof, stale framing, and ways to make an existing campaign more useful in AI-mediated discovery.
