Longer answers create more room for brands, but also more room for competitors, caveats, and third-party framing.

AI Overviews expanded

Beginning June 8, 2026, the average Google AI Overview in the monitored corpus grew from 165 words to 220 words. The higher level persisted for at least three consecutive days after a 16-day baseline.

Response length is not a quality score. But it changes the amount of narrative space available inside the result, and therefore the number of claims, comparisons, citations, and qualifications a user may encounter before clicking anywhere else.

More space does not automatically mean more visibility

A longer answer can include more brands and sources, but it can also spend more time explaining why one option is preferable to another. Share of Answers may rise while the intended Narrative weakens. A brand can appear in a longer answer and still be described with outdated positioning or lose on the criteria that matter to the audience.

A plausible reason for the longer format

Google describes AI features as capable of breaking a complex question into related searches and finding additional supporting pages. One plausible explanation is that the monitored prompts began receiving a more expansive answer mode, with more subtopics or comparison context assembled before the response was written.
