The answer is not built from brand websites alone. Earned coverage supplies much of the evidence AI chooses to show.

Observed evidence

Where cited links came from in the study

Across the 25-million-prompt What Is AI Reading? study, earned media made up 84% of links cited in AI answers.

The link graph is mostly independent

In Muck Rack’s What Is AI Reading? study, earned media made up 84% of the links cited in AI answers across more than 25 million prompts. Journalism alone supplied 27% of cited links. The result does not mean every answer needs a news story; it does show that independent reporting is a major part of the information environment AI uses to substantiate an answer.

That matters for teams treating generative engine optimization as a purely owned-content exercise. A well-structured page can establish facts and accessibility. It cannot always provide the comparative, experiential, or third-party proof that an answer uses to recommend one option over another.

Earned influence is measurable

The question is whether earned coverage shows up in the answers that matter. That requires a link between the answer, the cited material, the journalist or outlet behind it, and the question being asked.
