A mention can be positive, inaccurate, faintly dismissive, or built around the wrong message. Visibility alone cannot tell the difference.

AI visibility is necessary, and incomplete

Visibility tells you whether a brand, product, person, place, or event appeared in an AI answer. That is a useful first measurement. If the subject is consistently absent from important questions, there is a clear discoverability problem.

But presence does not reveal how the subject was framed. A brand can appear frequently while losing every comparison, carrying outdated facts, or being associated with a message it no longer wants to own.

AI visibility is part of portrayal, not an alternative to it

AI portrayal is the overall way an answer surfaces, describes, evaluates, and represents a subject. Share of Answers is its first measure: whether and how prominently the subject appears. It cannot, by itself, explain the meaning of the mention.

That distinction matters because AI systems increasingly synthesize a recommendation instead of presenting a neutral list of links. The narrative inside the response may influence perception before a user visits a website.

Build the portrayal profile with the SEEN Framework

The four measures together form a portrayal profile. Citations, source influence, model, audience, location, language, and time help explain why that profile changes; they are evidence and context, not additional top-level portrayal measures.

  • Share of Answers: how often the subject appears across important unbranded prompts
  • Evaluation: sentiment, recommendation, preference, and performance on evaluative dimensions
  • Error Rate: how often AI claims conflict with customer-supplied facts
  • Narrative: whether AI carries the messages the customer chose to track

When Share of Answers is the right metric

Share of Answers remains the right starting point for broad discovery questions and market-share comparisons. It becomes misleading only when it is treated as proof that the brand is being understood correctly.

Use Share of Answers to locate an absence. Use the complete portrayal profile to understand what AI says when you do appear.
